Dorothy Applegate Foulk, 78, of Winner, SD passed away Friday, March 1, 2013 at her home in Winner, SD. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at 4:00pm at the First Christian Church in Winner, SD.

There will be a visitation held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the Church.
Dorothy was born October 22, 1934 in Winner, SD, the daughter of William and Mary Applegate. Her father died in March 1934, her mother remarried Erick Fredricks when Dorothy was 3 years old. They lived in Hamill and the Iona areas as she grew up. She attended Winner High School until her sophomore year.

She then moved to California, where she met and married Guy "Skipper" Foulk. They then moved to Greenville, PA.

Dorothy returned to Winner to care for her mother in 1979 and divorced Guy. She had previously worked as an aid in the Winner Hospital and Nursing Home, but due to her hearing loss she was unable to continue.

She then worked in the kitchen as a cook in the nursing home. Dorothy received her GED with the persisted urging of her sister Marian. She passed with flying colors. She also passed her driving test and the college entrance exam.

In the fall of 1981 she enrolled at USD-Springfield where she earned an associate degree in library science. She transferred to Southwest State University in Marshall, MN. Dorothy graduated in 1986 with degrees in Political Science, English and History. Dorothy returned to Winner from Marshall, MN and worked as a cook at Golden Prairie Manor until her retirement two years ago.
She did fill in the kitchen when asked to also so she never really retired fully. She was very fond of the residents of the Manor. Dorothy was an avid reader and kept abreast of international, nation, state, and local news books. She was a regular customer at the Winner Thrift Store and The Store. She also had a "witty and fun" personality.

Dorothy is survived by three daughters, LeeAnne Zaniewski, Lander, WY; Lisa (Dan) Sharrow, St. Clair Shores, MI; Lori Karlberg, Falkville, AL; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren. Siblings: Marian Jorgensen, Winner, SD; William (Mary) Applegate, Omaha, NE; Gene (Donna) Fredricks, Mesa, AZ; Shirley (Bob) Leetch, Salinas, CA; Deanna (Allan) Croston, Winner, SD; several nieces and nephews and a special friend Ellie Malone, Slaton, MN.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her father, mother, step-father, Brothers Frank Applegate, Robert Applegate, David Fredricks, Sister Merlyn Rogashenko, and grandson Blake Sharrow. Her family is especially grateful to Deanna and Sandra Croston for the wonderful 24 hour care they gave Dorothy for the past four months.
