GENEVA - Evelyn LaVern Nelson Thurin of Ong died Monday, October 11, 1993 at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 83 years, four months and one day.
Services were held October 14 in the Stockholm Lutheran Church near Shickley with the Reverend David Schafer officiating. Sheila Hendricksen accompanied the vocalists, Gaylord and LuAnn Nickel and Rhonda Vest, and the congregational singing.

Casket bearers were grandsons, Matt Thurin, Mark Thurin, Randall Powers, Rodney Bear, Douglas Saville, Tim Thurin Daniel Thurin and Trent Thurin. Honorary bearers were granddaughters, Rhonda Powers Vest, LuAnn Powers Nickel, Lori Bear Brown, Pam Thurin Godfrey, Paula Thurin Steiner, Valerie Thurin Shambaugh, Ann Thurin and Tammy Saville Hefelbower. Interment was in the Ong Cemetery with Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva in charge of arrangements.

Mrs Thurin was born June 10, 1910 to Albin Nelson and Mamie Thorson Nelson on a farmstead near Ong. She lived her entire life in Ong or around the Ong community. She was raised on a farm just south of Ong and attended Star country School through the eighth grade. She was baptized and confirmed in the Stockholm Lutheran Church and later was a member of the Gethsamane Lutheran church in Ong until its closing.

She was active in the Ladies Aid of both churches, a member of the Ong Women's Club and also belonged to the Methodist Ladies Aid. As a young woman, she worked for several families and took care of mothers and their new babies. She married Roy Thurin of Ong on September 30, 1929.

They lived and worked on the farm. Later, she was employed as head cook for the hot lunch program at the Ong Schools for 20 years.
Preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, Jess, and one sister, Pluma.

Survivors include her husband, Roy; three sons and daughters-in-law, Leland and Barbara Thurin of Lawrence, Leonard and Rosemarie Thurin of Geneva and Richard and Karen Thurin of Grant; three daughters and sons-in-law Geraldine and Jim Powers of Dewitt, Carolyn and Don Saville of Dewitt and Shirley and Bob Bear of Ong; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Rosina Nelson of Spokane WA, Ruth and George Idt of Hastings and Ruby and Bob Karnatz of Hastings.
