AWRENCE - Leland E "Tuffy" Thurin of Lawrence died November 12, 2001 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings at the age of 70.

Services were held November 15, 2001 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rosemont with the Reverend William Caughey officiating. Private family burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Lawrence.

Leland was born January 8, 1931 to Roy L and Evelyn L (Nelson) Thurin at Ong. He graduated from Ong High School in 1949. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War in 1950-52 as a tank commander. He achieved the rank of sergeant.

On March 15, 1953, he married Barbara M Dawson at Fairbury. He graduated from Kearney State College in 1956. He taught and coached in Ong and Edgar and in Lawrence for 30 years until retiring in 1993.

He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Rosemont, Kent Kailey Post No. 45 in Lawrence and Nebraska Teachers and Coaches Association.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Matt of Pinebluffs, WY and Mark of Hastings; three daughters, Pam Gotfrey of Dix, Paula Steiner of Hastings and Valerie Hoit of Guide Rock; two brothers, Leonard of Geneva and Richard of Grant; three sisters, Geri Powers of Dewitt, Carolyn Saville of Beatrice and Shirley Bear of Grand Island; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one step-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Leland E Thurin Scholarship Fund at Lawrence/Nelson high School
Mertin-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill was in charge of arrangements.
