Noteringar

Swan Nelson was born in Kristianstad lau, Sweden, November 24, 1844. He passed away at his home northeast of Ong, Neb., Monday evening, July 23, 1934 at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 29 days.

Mr Nelson grew to manhood in Sweden, arriving in America in 1873. He was married to Miss Ellen Nelson at Ashland, NE., December 24, 1873. This union was blessed with nine children, five sons and four daughters, The six children who are living and who are all residing in the Ong community are Emmert, Mary, Edward, Melinda, Albert and Adolf. Two daughters and one son preceded the father to the greater world, Annie, Marie and Levin.

Arriving from Sweden, after a short stay at Ashland, Mr and Mrs Nelson settled on their homestead two and one-half miles northeast of Ong, where they have lived since 1873. Thus the Nelson are reckoned with the early pioneers of the Ong community. They first lived in a dugout, their second dwelling a small farm house which still stands on the farm, being part of the present house occupied by their son who farms the land.

Mr Nelson was baptised and confirmed in the Lutheran church, the mother church of Sweden. For a great number of years the Nelson were member of the Stockholm Lutheran church at Shickley, Neb. In 1922 they transferred their membership to Gethsemane Lutheran church of Ong, where Mr Nelson was a faithful and honored member at the time of his death. During the last years of his life due to failing strength, Mr Nelson has been unable to be present at the services.

Through God's great love and wonderful mercy Mr and Mrs Nelson enjoyed the unique and honored distinction of celebrating both the fiftieth and the sixtieth anniversary of the wedding day, celebrating the latter anniversary December 24 last year. The singular anniversaries registered wonderful memorable festivities in their lives. At the sixtieth wedding anniversary it was observed by Mr Nelson that all the six children living, with their families as well as grandchildren's families, were all members of the same church to which Mr and Mrs Nelson belonged, the Gethsemane Lutheran of Ong. Something very singular in a large circle of relatives. God's guiding love is clearly visible in such a happy realization.

Left to mourn Mr Nelson's departure are his beloved wife, the children, Emmert, Mrs Henry Swanson and Edward of Ong, Mrs Melinda Pearson of Shickley, Albert and Adolph also of Ong, nineteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs Hannah Thurin of Chicago, a host of other relatives and a multitude of friends.

We believe that Mr Nelson had the consciousness and cherished the conviction that he was a sinner and saved by grace along through the precious blood of Jesus. Like a tired wearied, thought radiant traveler, he peacefully folded his hands and left us for the glorious home of God's eternal rest. God grant that we may meet again at home with Jesus some radiant, blessed day.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 25, from the home at 1:30 and 2 o'clock at the church. The pastor, Rev H.L. Hassel, chose as text Rev 22:7. Speaking on the theme "Blessed in Conscious Realization of His Coming." Mrs Carl Ericson and Mrs Minnie Sandberg rendered beautiful messages in song, singing at the home, "Rock of Ages," at the church "There is a Gate that Stands Ajar," "Some Day We'll Understand," and "Shall we Meet Beyond the River," and at the grave, "There is a Land that is Fairer Than Day."

The many beautiful flowers and the great number of friends present rendered a singular tribute to departed. Interment was made in Stockholm cemetery.
