He was an Illinois Central Railroad Engineer. When he reached the age of 21 years old his maternal grandfather Phillip Gorman was no longer his guardian and he received the balance of his father's inheritance that was due him as his mother had relinguished her rights as a parent (as she married J. Walter Rathbone, on April 25, 1894 after the death of her first husband December 17, 1893) so that she could receive room and board from each of her childrens' inheritance's from their father Edward Maley, Jr. for expenses incurred in raising them. She charged the estate for clothing, books, medicine, repair of shoes, doctor's fees and even when Nellie, his sister died, Annie Gorman Maley Rathbone received burial expenses from the money that was left to all three of them from their father's estate.
