Charles Benjamin Nelson was born January 31, 1932 on the farm of Edward & Flossie Nelson two and a half miles northeast of Ong, Nebraska. He attended district 52 country school and later graduated from Ong High School in 1949. He was baptized and confirmed at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, in Ong, Nebraska.
After graduation, he started working part-time for Shickley Grain Company. He worked in this capacity along with helping his dad on the farm until October 22, 1952 at which time he was drafted into the U. S. Army. While in the Army, he served occupation duty in Southern Germany and was honorably discharged on October 4, 1954. Upon returning from the service he returned to Shickley Grain Co. working full time.
On September 19, 1955, he married Bonnie Jean Peterson, daughter of Clinton and Irene Peterson at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Ong, Nebraska. To this union four children were born, Cynthia, Paul, Wendell, and Brent.
In 1956 he went to work for Alfs Well Drilling Company of Shickley, Nebraska. In late 1959 he started working for McCreath Home Building Company of Fairmont, Nebraska. After 3 1/2 years in the carpentry trade he started his own company. He built homes in the Shickley, Sutton, and Davenport area for thirty-five years. He also was a dealer for Westland Homes of Hastings, Nebraska for fourteen years.
At age 55 he decided to change his operation and was hired at Midlands Community Hospital, in Papillion, NE owned by Quaram Health Resources, Inc. He was in charge of new construction within the hospital along with hospital maintenance. In 1996, he was recognized as employee of the year at Midlands Community Quorum of Excellence Award from Quoram Health Resources, Inc. in Brentwood, Tennessee. He and his wife spent three days at the main office in Tennessee. Ben retired from Midlands Community Hospital in 1998.
Ben enjoyed working construction his whole life. Many times making something from nothing. His wife Bonnie was a registered nurse and constant soul mate in raising their family. His pride and joy were being with his family and grandchildren. His hobby was barbershop singing. He was a charter member of the Papillion Sarpy Serenaders and later Hastings Chorus of Plains. He also loved pulling and plowing with antique tractors with his sons and grandsons. His most recent joy was going on the annual Great Nebraska Tractor Ride.
Churches he attended besides Gethsemane were Christ's Lutheran Church in Davenport, Zion Lutheran in Sutton, St. Paul's in Hastings, Grace Lutheran in Hebron but Stockholm Swedish Lutheran Church was always home.
