Noteringar

The Ong community was severely shocked last Wednesday, May 3rd, when it became know that Mr Emmert W Nelson had come to an untimely end. One could hardly believe it that this honest and respectable citizen and progressive farmer had passed on. It was nevertheless true.

Mr Nelson was born near Ong in Fillmore County, Nebraska September 21, 1879. He was bapitzed in infancy and confirmed in the Stockholm Lutheran church on May 13, 1894. On June 20th, 1907 he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Caroline Benson, and to this union were born six children, four sons and two daughters.

In 1922 the Nelson family united with the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Ong where he served in various capacities during the years, He passed away on May 3rd, 1939 at the age of 59 years, 7 months and 12 days. His wife died May 2, 1937; also two sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon May 5th, from the Gethsemane Lutheran Church after a brief prayer service in the home, with the pastor the Rev A Walfred Anderson of Saronville in charge, A male quartet, Oscar Rudd, Dean Wight, Kenneth and Clinton Peterson sang at the home and also two selections at the church. Mr and Mrs Clinton Peterson sang a duet. The church was crowded with relatives and friends.

Algot Peterson, Arthur Johnson, Ed Fayle, Oscar Danielson, Jake Frahm and Adolph Anderson served as pallbearers.

He leaves to mourn his passing the four sons, Arnold of Casper Wyo., Clayton of Ong, Layle of New Castle Wyo and Keith of Wichita, Kansas; the two daughters, LaVerne and Emogene both at home; three grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs Henry Swanson of Ong, Mrs Melinda Pearson of Shickley and three brothers Edward, Albert and Adolph all of Ong and many other relatives and friends.

Interment was in Ong Cemetery by the side of his wife.

Emmert Nelson, about 65, of Ong, a life-long resident of that vicinity, and a highly respected citizen, took his own life at the farm home near that city early Wednesday morning by drowning. The body was discovered by friends of the family about 10:30 a.m. in the bottom of a cistern on the farm into which he had leaped.

Mr. Nelson had been in ill health for some time and despondent since the loss of his wife, who passed away two years ago, following a long illness. He had appeared upon the streets of Ong earlier that morning where he had taken his two daughters, Emma Jean and Laverne, to attend classes at school. At that time he displayed no intentions of commiting (sic) the fatal act.

His body was recovered following the receipt of a letter by Algot Peterson, Ong merchant, which had been mailed at Nelson stating that his body would be found in the cistern. Mr. Peterson immediately notified friends at Ong, who rushed to the farm, two miles northwest of the city, only too late to prevent the act, as indications pointed to the fact that he had leaped into the cistern sometime during the early morning.

Sheriff John Harr and County Attorney John E. Sullivan were called to the scene and made arrangements for the removal of the body and to complete the routine investigation following which a definite verdict of suicide was reached.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his two daughters, Emma Jean, and Laverne, who resided with their father at the farm; four sons, Ronald of Cheyenne, Wyo., Layle of Newcastle, Wyo., Keith of Wichita, Kansas, and Clayton who resides on a farm near Ong. -- Clay Center Sun, May 4, 1939
