She spent most of her youth working the family floral business. Rita graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1939 with a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics. In 1940 she married Franklin W Southwick. They built and lived their lives in Amherst,MA,and raised four sons. Their sons are David,Peter,Donald and Steven.
