William R. "Bill" Johnston, 86, of Cheyenne died July 30 at Life Care Center of Cheyenne.
He was born July 11, 1920, in Ingomar, Mont.

Mr. Johnston served in the U.S. Army and was a D-Day and Normandy World War II veteran.
He retired after 27 years in the Army Reserves as a chief warrant officer IV. He also worked for 30 years in civil service, including working on Gen. Eisenhower's staff in Paris.
Mr. Johnston enjoyed stream fishing and playing cards.

He is survived by two sons, Jerry Johnston of Cheyenne and Russell Johnston of Milton, Tenn.; two daughters, Patsy Rautenberg of Maryland and Donna Weaver of Roseburg, Ore.; three brothers, Albert Johnston of Sela, Wash., Lawrence Johnston of Huntsville, Ala., and Charles J. Johnston of Spokane, Wash.; three sisters, June Phythian of Missoula, Mont., Janet Reynolds of Billings, Mont., and Elva Johnston of Edmonds, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by his wife of more than 62 years, LaVerne Johnston in 2004; a son, Gene Johnston; his parents, Claude and Sara Johnston; three brothers, Father Dorrence Johnston, Claude Johnston and Alvin Johnston; and a sister, Donna Miller.
Services will be 1 p.m. today Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Rapp and the Rev. Robert Schmidt co-officiating.

Interment will be in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.
Friends may contribute to the Veteran's Affairs Hospital.
