LaVerne Lucille Johnston, 80, of Cheyenne died Aug. 24 at home.
She was born Aug. 30, 1923, in Ong, Neb. She was the daughter of Emmert and Emma (Benson) Nelson. She was baptized at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Ong and was a dedicated Lutheran. She graduated from Ong High School in1941.
She married William R. Johnston on Sept. 24, 1943, in Utah.
Mrs. Johnston was employed with J.C. Penney Co. Inc. from 1941-1943 and then from 1960-1970. She moved to Cheyenne in 1947, then lived in Montana and Seattle before returning to Cheyenne in 1990.

Mrs. Johnston was a active member in the Lutheran churches to which she belonged, serving as Sunday school superintendent and participating in women's activities.

She visited the ill and older members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, which she continued to do in spite of her illness. She enjoyed life, laughter, her neighbors and especially children. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Cheyenne Airport Golf Club Pinochle Club.
Mrs. Johnston is survived by her husband of 60 years, William R. Johnston of Cheyenne; her children, Russell of Tennessee, Patsy Rautenberg of Washington, D.C., Jerry of Cheyenne and Donna Weaver of Oregon; a sister, Jean Murray of Cheyenne; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gene, and her brothers, Arnold, Clayton, Layle and Keith Nelson.
