Born Martins Johnsen in Rimstad, the former municipality of Davik in the traditional district of Nordfjord in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. He was the son of Jon Larssen and Kristi Iversdatter. He had three brothers, John, Lars, Iver, and a sister, Martha.
Murray County Hearld, Slayton, Minnesota
Martin Remstad was born April 18, 1861, in Nordfjord, Norway. There he grew to manhood, serving his native country three terms in its army. On Mary 15, 1887, he arrived in America and soon after came to Slayton, establishing himself in the wagon business in which he was an expert. In 1890 he was naturalized as an American citizen.
On April 23, 1892, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Aaflei, the wedding taking place in this city. To this happy union eight children were born, four of whom died in infancy, two others, Mrs. James Cassidy, of Pennfield, Illinois, who died in 1927 and Einar, of Pipestone, who was killed in a truck accident two years ago. Mrs. Laurence Sandquist, of Canton S.D., and Julius of this city, a brother, John, also of this city, and a sister and brother in Norway, and six grandchildren, are the only survivors.
The deceased was always interested in the better things of life. He was a constant student and though he did not air his knowledge, could converse intelligently on national and international events. He enjoyed debate and was always able to inject his own quaint humor into any argument.
