ONG - Roy Leonard Thurin died May 25, 1997 at Fillmore County Long Term Care Facility at the age of 92 years, eight months and 24 days.
Services were held May 28, 1997 at Stockholm Lutheran Church of rural Shickley with Pastor David Schafer officiating. Burial was in the Ong City Cemetery.
Sheila Hendrickson accompanied the congregational singing. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Matt Thurin, Mark Thurin, Randall Powers, Rodney Bear, Douglas Saville, Tim Thurin, Daniel Thurin and Trent Thurin.
Honorary bearers were his granddaughters, Rhonda Vest, LuAnn Nickel, Lori Brown, Pam Gotfrey, Paula Steiner, Valerie Shambaugh, Ann Thurin and Tammy Heflebower.
Roy was born September 1, 1904 to Anton and Emma Samuelson Thurin on a farm north of Ong. He was baptized and confirmed in the Stockholm Lutheran Church east of Ong. He was a member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Ong for many years until its closing when he renewed his membership at Stockholm.
He attended public school in Ong and later completed a business education course at Luther College in Wahoo. He married Evelyn Nelson at her parents farm home on September 30, 1929 with Reverend Henning officiating. They farmed until 1935 when Roy took over the Ong Transfer Trucking Co after the death of Evelyn's father Albin Nelson. After the outbreak of Work War II he was foreman of construction crews at the Kearney Air Base, Grand Island Ammunition Deport and the Hastings Naval Ammunition's Depot. They then purchased the Thurin family home by Ong and along with farming ran a small dairy. They lived there until retiring in 1965 when they moved to town He served on the board of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Stockholm Lutheran Church, was a member of the Ong Public School Board of Education, assessor for Clay County for over 30 years, served on the Logan Township Board, Farmers Coop Board, Village Board, was a volunteer fireman and chief and a charter member of the Ong Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn; parents, Anton and Emma Thurin; a brother, Reynold and great-grandson Leland Gotfrey.
Survivors include his children, Leland and wife Barbara of Lawrence, Geraldine and husband Him Powers of DeWitt, Leonard and wife Rosemarie of Geneva, Carolyn and husband Don Saville of Beatrice, Shirley and husband Bob Bear of Ong and Richard and wife Karen of Grant; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren and one step great great grandson; two sisters, Ruth Idt and husband George and Ruby Karnatz and husband Robert of Hastings and one sister-in-law Rosina Nelson of Spokane, WA Memorial my be directed to the family.
