Mary Hildegard Thunell Hardy died November 27, 2006, in Murray, Utah, of complications from a sudden illness. She was born May 8, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Isaac Peter and Hildegard Valentine Olson Thunell.

She attended Garfield School in Salt Lake City until the family moved to Holladay, Utah in 1933. She then attended Holladay Elementary, Irving Junior High School and graduated from Granite High School in 1944.

On October 26, 1944, she married her sweetheart, Kenneth Ralph Hardy, in the Salt Lake Temple. Their marriage has lasted 62 wonderful years. To them were born six children, who survive her: Kathryn (Kay) McCollam (Curt deceased); Thomas Ralph (Ann); Arnold Kenneth (Rachel); Lowell Richard (Debra); James (Jim) Clark (Luisa), and David Leonard (Marianne). Another daughter, Janean McPolin was added to the family. Her role as wife and mother was further enhanced by her 33 grandchildren, and soon to be 30 great-grandchildren. It was the great joy of her life to see them grow and develop.

Mary's life has always revolved around her family and her church. She loved her country and took pride in being a first-generation American citizen, both of her parents having been born in Sweden. She shared this distinction with three brothers and three sisters: Magda Olausen (Sverre) both deceased; Raymond (deceased) (Florence); J. Richard "Dick" (Nedra deceased); Roland (Marie) both deceased; Melva Omer (deceased) (Wayne), and Millie Weed.

She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many callings, including leading the music in Primary at age 15, which she loved and was called to do many times over the years. She loved to sing and share the Gospel through music, serving as an organist and in several choirs. Her church service also included many years as Teacher Development Leader, Sunday School teacher, Relief Society president and genealogy extractor. She loved going to the temple, especially doing sealings. She spent many years doing genealogy research work and submitting names for temple work. She and Ken served a twelve month mission in the Salt Lake City Family History Mission.

When her children were older, she attended Brigham Young University and graduated in 1966 with a B.S. degree in education. Thus began 21 years as a first grade, then kindergarten teacher. She furthered her training with a M Ed degree in 1977, as a reading specialist and received an Early Childhood Education Certificate. She loved teaching and especially loved the little children she taught. She was honored as Teacher of the Year in the Alpine School District in 1984, and retired from teaching in 1987.

Mary loved the out-of-doors, camping, hiking, traveling, learning about nature and sharing these experiences with her family. She missed those activities as she grew older.
